Drone Swarming: New Rantizo Exemption Maximizes Productivity and Efficiency

July 2, 2024

SWARMING UP TO 3 DRONES ALLOWED WITH AMENDMENT TO EXEMPTION NO. 18929B

For drone operators, the ability to cover more acres per day is a key to efficiency, productivity and revenue. That’s why we are excited to announce the approval of an amendment to Exemption No. 18929B, allowing Rantizo operators in our spray service hub locations to swarm up to 3 drones weighing over 55 lbs.

This amendment also allows for night flying and flying without a visual observer (VO)

Swarming refers to flying multiple drones simultaneously, managed by one operator or a coordinated team. This technique makes it possible for spray drone operators to cover more ground, perform tasks faster, and increase overall productivity.

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY

  • Flying multiple drones, such as three DJI T30s or two XAG P100 Pros, can significantly boost operator productivity. This approach allows for more work to get done than using a single drone.
  • Swarming is ideal for managing large areas, like cornfields on opposite sides of a road, enabling efficient coverage without the need to move your home base.
  • One person can fly the drones while another manages batteries and chemicals, ensuring continuous operation, optimal use of resources while limiting downtime.

REDUCED TIME ON THE JOB

  • Using multiple drones at once reduces the overall time required to complete tasks, which can help during busy seasons when multiple jobs need to happen per day.

MORE REVENUE

  • More acres flown in less time means more revenue per operator.

While there are numerous benefits, swarming is an advanced technique requiring advanced coordination and control of multiple drones at one time. That’s why we require our operators to participate in training and meet minimum experience requirements prior to adopting swarming into their operation. We also recommend training for all operators pursuing similar exemptions and minimum experience with swarming under 55 lbs., supplemented with, or including a minimum number of flight hours.
